While New Mexico — the Land of Enchantment — is the fifth-largest state in the U.S., it also among the nation’s least-densely populated. It possesses deserts, thick forests and snow-capped peaks, but the Native American identity of the state is its hallmark. And it is the only state with an official question — “Red or green?” That refers to the choice of Hatch chile, the pepper that finds its way into most recipes in the state. With an abundance of research facilities, like the renown Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico has the highest concentration of Ph.D. holder of any state. But perhaps the coolest attraction in the state is the free-of-charge Red Rock Balloon Rally held each December in Gallup, in the northwest part of the state. It is the second-largest balloon event in the world.
