Just north of San Francisco along the Pacific Coast Highway, San Rafael has become the economic and cultural center of Marin. It is the primary commercial area, home of the corporate headquarters of BioMarin and hosts several major employers such as Kaiser Permanente, Macy’s and Wells Fargo Bank. The Downtown center provides a lively urban scene, with an emphasis on arts, entertainment, and local businesses. It’s also only a short drive from San Francisco, the Muir Woods, or Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Though normally a weekend destination, San Rafael’s booming corporations and unique downtown district has begun to pull people to stay the rest of the week, too.
